Atlanta, Michigan isn't the kind of place that shows up on "Top 10 Michigan Destinations" lists. It's a quiet town in Montmorency County, about 30 miles east of Gaylord in the northern Lower Peninsula. There's no downtown strip of boutiques, no craft brewery scene, no waterpark resort. And that's exactly the point.
What Atlanta does have is thousands of acres of state forest, dozens of lakes, over 100 miles of trails, and the kind of peace and quiet that's increasingly hard to find. If your idea of a good trip involves nature, not nightlife — read on.
On the Water
Crooked Lake Michigan
Crooked Lake MI is a quiet, natural woodland lake right in the Atlanta area. No jet skis allowed — perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, and evening paddles. The lake holds pike, bass, walleye, bluegill, and perch with public boat launches at both ends. It's the kind of lake cabin Michigan visitors dream about.
Clear Lake State Park
Just 15 minutes north, this state park sits on spring-fed Clear Lake. This is where you go for a sandy beach — swimming, picnic areas, hiking trails, and a boat launch. The water is remarkably clear. Great day trip with kids.
Lewiston Area Lakes
About 20 minutes south, the Lewiston area offers larger lakes with more beach options. If you want a full day of swimming and sun, it's worth the short drive.
On the Trails
Hiking & Nature Walks
The Mackinaw State Forest covers much of Montmorency County, and it's laced with trails, two-tracks, and fire lanes. You don't need a guidebook — pick a direction and walk. The forest is a mix of pine plantations, hardwood stands, and wetlands. You'll likely see deer, wild turkey, and if you're lucky, elk.
ATV & ORV Trails
Over 100 miles of state-designated ORV trails are accessible within 2 to 5 miles of Atlanta. The trails run through rolling forest terrain and connect to a larger regional network. Bring your own machine or check with local outfitters about rentals.
Fun fact: Atlanta is known as the "Elk Capital of Michigan." The area is home to Michigan's largest free-ranging elk herd — around 1,500 animals. Dawn and dusk are the best times to spot them, especially along M-32 east of town. During the September rut, you can hear bulls bugling from miles away.
Golf
Garland Lodge & Golf Resort
Just 25 minutes southwest of Atlanta, Garland sits on 3,000 acres of pristine Northern Michigan wilderness and offers four championship golf courses — 72 holes total. The courses weave through pine forests, rolling meadows, lakes, and streams. Fountains and Reflections both feature the unique combination of six par 3s, 4s, and 5s. They've also added a 10-hole reversible Par 3 short course. It's consistently rated among the best golf destinations in Michigan.
Gaylord Area Golf
Gaylord (35 minutes west via M-32) bills itself as Michigan's golf mecca, with Treetops Resort and several other courses. If you're planning a golf trip, you could play a different course every day for a week and never repeat.
In Town
Atlanta is small — genuinely small. But small towns have their charm. The county courthouse sits in the center of town, there's a general store, a few restaurants, and gas stations. It's the kind of place where people wave when they drive past.
For more shopping, dining, and amenities, Gaylord is a 35-minute drive and has everything — grocery stores, restaurants, outlet shopping, movie theaters, and big-box retail. It's close enough for a supply run but far enough that you don't feel like you're in suburbia.
