Start Right Here: Crooked Lake from Your Private Dock
Most guests don't need to leave the property on day one — and we mean that as a compliment. Czech Mates Escape sits directly on Crooked Lake, an 89-acre woodland lake with no jet skis, no motorboat traffic, and water clear enough to see the bottom. Your stay includes two kayaks, two paddle boards, a rowboat, and a private dock — and all the time you need.
Paddle north along the shoreline in the morning when the lake is glass-calm. Take a paddle board out for sunrise yoga. Fish for pike, bass, and walleye from the dock at dusk. Watch the sun drop behind the pines from the fire pit as the loons start calling. That's a full day right there, and you haven't left the property.
Guest tip: The best kayak window is 7–9am. The lake is completely still, the mist is still lifting, and you'll often see herons, deer, and osprey before anyone else is up. It's worth setting the alarm.
Clear Lake State Park — 15 Minutes North
When guests want a sandy beach, we send them to Clear Lake State Park. It's a 15-minute drive north of Czech Mates Escape and sits on a spring-fed lake with remarkably clear water. There's a proper sand beach, a boat launch, picnic areas, and hiking trails through mature pine forest. Great for families with kids who want to swim, and a nice contrast to the quieter, more private feel of Crooked Lake.
Elk Spotting — Atlanta's Best-Kept Secret
Atlanta calls itself the Elk Capital of Michigan for good reason. Michigan's largest free-ranging elk herd — roughly 1,500 animals — roams the forests of Montmorency County right outside our door. The best viewing is dawn and dusk along M-32 east of town. In September during the rut, you can hear bulls bugling from miles away. It's one of those experiences that sounds unlikely until you're standing 50 feet from a 700-pound bull in the fog.

Garland Golf Resort — 25 Minutes from the Cabin
If your group has golfers, Garland Lodge & Golf Resort is 25 minutes from Czech Mates Escape and worth every minute of the drive. Four championship courses on 3,000 acres of northern Michigan wilderness — 72 holes weaving through pine forests, streams, and meadows. It consistently ranks among the best golf destinations in Michigan, and the prices are far more reasonable than you'd expect for the quality.
For serious golfers, Gaylord is another 35 minutes west and offers even more options including Treetops Resort. You could play a different course every day for a week without repeating.
State Forest Trails — Step Out the Back Door
The Mackinaw State Forest surrounds Atlanta and laces the area with hundreds of miles of hiking trails, two-tracks, and ORV paths. You don't need a guidebook — pick a direction from the cabin and walk. The forest is a mix of pine plantations, hardwood stands, and wetland edges. In hunting season (October–November), thousands of acres of state land open up right outside our door — one of the main reasons hunters make Czech Mates Escape their base camp year after year.
Over 100 miles of state-designated ORV trails connect through the county if you bring your own machine. Ask us for the trailhead nearest to the cabin.
